Mrs. Scharmela Edwards comes to us with a myriad of educational experiences. Having had wonderful teachers whom she remembers even today, she learned to love learning as a young child. From enjoying the “extras” of the Gifted program to winning numerous awards across the curricula, Mrs. Edwards knows, firsthand, that our children can receive a quality education- even in an at risk community. She was afforded opportunities that allowed her to grow mentally and intellectually, as a child; and she wants to provide even more for our children.

Upon graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she attended Florida A&M University and the University of South Alabama where she graduated with a B.S. in Biology, minor in Chemistry; she planned to enter medical school. While working and waiting to take the MCAT, her high school presented her with an opportunity to share her enthusiasm for learning at her alma mater– especially in math and science. She decided to try it and was assigned 4 different math classes- with only an emergency credential! One of those classes was a remedial class for students who had repeatedly failed the Alabama High School Graduation Exam – a class without a curriculum or plan. She had to build her own, and she did. Seventy-six percent of that class passed the exam after her course.

At the end of that year, she decided that she had so enjoyed this experience that she signed up for another year and began preparation for a career as a teacher. After marriage and relocation to Sacramento, Mrs. Edwards decided to teach in the urban areas of Del Paso Heights and (later) South Sacramento. She taught the GED preparation program (Project Success) at the Greater Sacramento Urban League, providing test taking skills as well as general knowledge in all subjects (math, science, English -reading & writing, and social studies). She also enrolled in an administrative credential & degree program at CSUS. She landed a position as a high school math teacher in a charter school on the south side of Sacramento and later, she added science classes as she prepared high school dropouts to accomplish their dreams of graduating from high school.

The wife of a local Pastor, Mrs. Edwards understands well the importance of balance and excellence. Throughout her career, Mrs. Edwards has engaged even her most challenging students with a special level of TLC. She not only believes that all students can learn; she intends to make sure her children and their families know it too. She graduated in 2005, from National University, having earned her Master’s in Education and administrative credentials. Over the years, Mrs. Edwards has served as a teacher-mentor, presenter and trainer, leader and as the West Coast Science Lead – which gave her immediate oversight at over 15 school sites’ science departments within the school’s organization. She has also served as teacher in charge and interim principal; today, she hopes to continue inspiring youth to develop a lifelong love for learning and serve alongside a team of educators who share her “hunger” for success of all students - as Principal.
